The Reader on My Dundee Show

Avishay Artsy of The Reader writes:

If there’s one thing you can’t say about Karen Schnepf’s paintings, it’s that they’re drab. In fact, her canvases seem to be bursting with life. The images are colorful and vivid, layered and full of depth. The self-taught painter, a native of Le Mars, Iowa, has been a fixture on Omaha’s art scene for about six years. While she studied briefly at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, she said she prefers the freedom to experiment and “color outside the lines.” She worked in glass before transitioning to paintings. Yet some of her old medium has remained — the art is glossed over — she won’t reveal what the coating is, saying it’s a family secret, but that glassy finish has become her signature.
